Choryang is home to a settlement area with over 10,000 international residents and a commercial area. Shops for foreigners began to appear in the aftermath of the Korean War.
The many bars in the area earned it the notorious nickname “Texas Village,” but it has now evolved into a normal commercial district serving international residents. Chinatown in Choryang-dong was once the home of the consulate office for the Qing Dynasty and is the largest settlement area for Chinese residents.
To celebrate the sister city relationship between Busan and Shanghai in 1993, it was called Shanghai Street, but was designated as a local specialized development district in July 2007. The Chinatown Special Zone allows visitors to feel as if they were in China with Chinese-style decorations and roofs, Chinese restaurants and diverse languages used in China to be heard.
